The RZA conquers all

Over the years The RZA has always impressed me. I may not always like his music but can't deny how prolific he's been and how he's been able to transcend beyond hip-hop. I'll never forget meeting him like 11 years ago. I've met a lot of people in the music world, specifically the hip-hop world, and he really stood out. He talked to everybody he could, was friendly, warm and lacked any ego that you would expect. (at the time Wu-Tang was on top of the world) He just really seems connected to people and is very open-minded, positive and empathetic to the world but at the same time has been very business savvy. Now, what seems to be no surprise, he's gotten into 19th century style painting. It seems kind of humorous at first but then when you realize that he's reinterpreting classic paintings with white guys and placing himself and other Wu-Tang members in the pieces, the message becomes more profound. This project is a joint venture with W.A.I.L. I'd definitely buy one of these if I had the loot.

Oh, and The RZA is getting into making movies now too!

Definitely worth watching! Check the Ecstatic Mos Def on tour in Japan and get some perspective on where his head's at, the importance of hip-hop and how the culture affects the world. Oh, and go get the new album, The Ecstatic!! One of the top 10 albums of the year...sure, there were plenty of good songs (Drake, Kid Cudi, Kanye, Jay-Z, etc...) but very few good albums...in hip-hop, the only full hip-hop albums worth getting this year are the new Raekwon, Q-Tip & the new Mos Def...period. It's a RAP!

Visualizing Music

Really dope motion graphics by Belgian artist Gwen Vanhee exploring new ways to interpret music. Finding new and innovative ways to translate sound to visuals and vice versa always fascinates me. The graphics by themselves are great but the context and execution really brings them to a higher level. I highly recommend checking out some of his other work on Vimeo and Flickr.

Not Your Typical '80s Jam Pt. 1

This came up today while my iTunes was on shuffle. I did this mix to be given out at a party I did back in 2004. This was recorded at about 10am on a Wednesday in one session with just a stack of some of my favorite records from the '80s. The theme of the party and the mix was to highlight some of the '80s joints that get overlooked when people talk about "80s music" and to put in context with some of the more familiar classics. Enjoy!

Paul Henry Ramirez

The first time I saw a picture of something by Paul Henry Ramirez I really didn't pay attention to it and just glanced over it as if it were just some other contemporary graphic design that I've seen thousands of times before. I think the piece was "Chunk 5". The second time, however, his work immediately caught my eye. Sometimes we just need to be in a certain frame of mind to really appreciate something. When I did a little investigating to see more of his work I was hooked!

The thing is, his work is so simple it could be easily glanced over. When you take more than a second to really see the life in his pieces. The bold colors, simple forms, balance and contrast all work in harmony to create depth and movement. In many of his works, shapes seem to assume the role of machinery and the composition is presented as one frame, frozen in time, of the workings of a larger machine and you wonder, "how this machine is working and why?" In his installations, Paul Henry Ramirez gets to show us how his canvases work with a larger machine and each piece works with the others to create a cohesive stystem that seems to be part of the architectural space.

I highly recommend visiting his website

The Ecstatic

You NEED to go get this new Mos Def album when it drops later this month on Downtown records. I'll admit that I was a little skeptical at first but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a refreshingly dope album. No fluff, a couple little anecdotal skits and only 3 cameos. After learning what a huge fan Mos Def is of Doom (here)I was hoping to see a collabo...maybe soon?. My only issues with this album are that some of the songs aren't mastered well and I get tired of hearing Mos Def just rambling for about half of every track...take out the rambling though and each song would only be about 90 seconds! hahaa... It was really hard to pick out 'the best' songs but here are 3 of my favorites:

Wu-Tang covers remixed

This is a really clever project by designer Logan Waters. Wu-Tang Clan and the solo projects have become modern classics in much the same way as popular jazz did in the '50s & '60s. So, it makes sense to pay homage to the Wu in a way that reflects on the timelessness of their music. Ok, that was a bunch of designer b.s. talk. On the real though, they're dope and it's a good idea. nuff said...

It's a video for Stone Throw Records artist, Mayer Hawthorne I still need to get the record though :/ This video is dope and I'm especially feeling how the actual record is the object of attention and desire here. It's subliminally telling me/you that the music is more important than the video and we need to love it and buy the cool heart-shaped vinyl- which is a throwback to Bobby Caldwell's 1978 classic, "What You Won't Do For Love", that was also pressed on clear red vinyl and cut into a heart shape.

Abundance! GET IT!

I've been wanting to post this for a while now but it's better late than never! Just go buy the new album by Platinum Pied Pipers, 'Abundance'. It's rare in modern music for an entire album to be thorough from start to finish and really hold my attention. Abundance does just that. It's a beautiful amalgamation of r&b, funk, latin and house. The range of emotions captured in the lyrics help to quantify the diversity in the styles of music represented here. Focusing on the talents of lesser known artists solidifies the passion in the songs. From the uptempo single 'On A Cloud' to the more laid back 'Pigeon Hole' and to the club tracks like 'American Pimp' and 'Rocket Science' this album keeps you hooked in for the duration. The only disappointing part is when it ends, in which case you'll likely press play again or flip the record over.

Buy it direct from Ubiquity. While you're at it, buy their first album too if you don't have it yet (which you should).

David Ellis

David Ellis is an amazing contemporary artist. I've seen a few of his pieces out of context and didn't look him up. Very inspiring work. What's truly amazing is how big his body of work is at this point and how diverse he is. I have to wonder though...were any of the records used, still good? I've seen some terrifying acts by artists that didn't know how hard certain records are to find and then just destroy them. Yes, painters and sculptors can also increase the costs and rarity of records. For all you people out there either doing art on/with vinyl or know people that do...PLEASE make sure they are worthless records!! I can't stress enough the importance of preserving hard to find records or even common records that are in excellent condition. Anyway, check this dudes' work.

Kutiman remixes YouTube

Yeah, I know I'm late to post this. For those of you that haven't seen this you'll be shocked and for those of you that have seen it you'll still want to watch it again because it's DOPE!! Israeli producer Kutiman used only YouTube videos to create a new album! Kutiman is known for doing some nice remixes and some original material. Chances are you've heard at least something either produced or remixed by Quantic at some point in the last 8 years even if you have no idea who he is. This is because the man behind Quantic, WIll Holland, is nothing short of a musical prodigy in the modern sense of the word. He is one of the most prolific people in modern music and covers a wide range of styles from raw funk, house, trip-hop, broken beat, reggae, hip-hop, latin, jazz and afro beat. Since 2001 he has released over 20 albums and singles, has done dozens of remixes and still finds time to DJ and even did a rare funk compilation a few years back. To put it bluntly, he is nothing short of amazing and has been a major force in the underground music scene since releasing his first album 'The 5th Exotic' on Tru Thoughts.

I Want Your Soul

Now in the last post we saw one extreme of this new generation of house/techno..but we also have the " Ol' Heads " to consider. Dudes like Armand Van Helden can get away with doing some retro hip-hop shit because he IS hip-hop. Sure, he's made his money in the house scene but real heads know, he was a dope hip-hop producer first. I guess that's why a lot of his tracks have that edge to them. This dude has been one of the most consistent and prolific producers in the last 20 years. DON"T SLEEP! This first video came out last year I believe and is pretty dope. I gotta admit though, I rarely played the original...the Jesse Rose remix just bangs harder and worked better on the dance floor.

However, I still play this next track out every-so-often and it STILL gets people moving even if they've never heard it (I know that's hard to believe...). Bonified classic in every sense of the word. Any respectable DJ playing disco should know the sample instantly. The raw edit of this track is crazy too.

Here's a bonus.. If you're a "DJ" and don't own the song that was sampled for this on vinyl you should just quit! hahaha..

That's still not a good excuse for missing this release... Ahhhh...where to start!! Well, how about with the immediately apparent presence of mostly live instruments...not what I was expecting from Jazzanova but not surprised either. (remember the Sonar Kollektiv Orchestra album from earlier this year?) As producers of quality music, Jazzanova rarely let me down but there's not much they've done that really blows me away or gives me chills. Oh, and keep in mind, these dudes are from Berlin! It seems like a lot of the best soul & funk music is coming from Europe (or at least gets more support there). I have to wonder though...what happened to their sense of album art??!!! So, it's been a WHILE since I've done a weekly party but a good opportunity presented itself and the wait is over! Starting December 6th I'll be rockin' every Saturday night at Sakeya from 10p-2a. Cover is only $5 and Free for ladies until midnight. (and Free on the guestlist). There's drink specials until midnight and the kitchen will be serving until 1! (the food here is amazing!!! authentic Japanese & Korean dishes and some of the best sushi I've ever had)

Ok, ok....enough about all that stuff...what you really need to know is what the music & vibe will be. We just want a nice & open-minded crowd. Grown Folks isn't just about ol' heads or some pretentious bullshit...it's for anyone that needs something besides the typical top40/frat party vibe. Classics, House, Soul, Hip-Hop, R&B, Latin, Disco, Afro-Beat and of course Polka!

For a small sample of what to expect, listen to my mixes on the main page of this site and download some of the sets in the downloads section. I'll be recording live at the party too so check back for some snippets from each party.

Listen!

This video is ill and it's for one of the best songs on the album. (btw...why is the vinyl so fucking expensive! A 2xLP should only be about $15 (or less) for domestic releases!)

Delivery Man

I can't front, I like The Cool Kids. Just some good Hip-Hop for the dome piece. Nothing real fancy or gimmicky..their K.I.S.S. approach is workin. Plus, these dudes are seriously grindin' and are 2 of the busiest and hardest working in Hip-Hop right now.

Glaciers of Ice

Still one of the best songs about drugs and murder ever made. One of my favorite RZA productions too.
don't sleep.

Really nice photos for ad campaign

Sorry about the back to back photo-based postings but I just found this and want to share NOW! This company called Insight makes clothes & accessories targeted to the surf/skate/snow market. Their new ad campaign called "Dopamine" is really nice and based on the links on their site, it's a company I can definitely support (what other clothing company puts Noam Chomsky in their links!?)

GOOD music videos this week!

This week I've decided to post some good music videos for once. For this first video I think the music is just ok but the video is very cleverly done with a budget of about $0. Just a digital camera and a laptop. (I'm guessing somebody had a camera and a MBP before they thought of this!)

I think this is a pretty good contemporary rock song but the video is nice. I love these collages of old scientific footage.

Now for some classics...
I was psyched when I discovered this a couple years ago. One of the biggest breaks ever by one of the dopest rock/funk groups ever. (along with A Certain Ratio, The Dance, Defunkt, Pigbag, etc...) This video for Cavern is crazy. There's another version too but it's not as good.

Still one of the best videos in all of music is The Pharcyde's 'Drop' video. This technique has been used since then but this is the first that I know of to do a whole video in reverse. If you pay attention you can see that they tried to sync their lips too! (They had a linguist help train them for that.)

New styles of graffiti

Here's a few new explorations into graffiti worth checking out:

PaintThatShitGold allows you to bomb any other site on the web. It's part of the promotion for Atmosphere's recent album (I don't know if it's the most recent one)

Graffiti Playdo allows you to do graff with other people over the web.

Green Works' Reverse Graffiti is a really cool project. So simple but thought provoking in different ways. Thanks to one of my professors, Tony G from Grow Design, for letting me know about this. You can see a lot more pictures of these pieces on Flikr

Tagged In Motion is insane!!! I love the blend between the primitiveness (yes, it's a new word now) of graffiti with the cutting edge computer/tech/geek/vr stuff.
This still blows me away when I watch it. I first saw this about 6 months ago and it's stayed in my mind since then so it's pretty damn impressive.

Hektor is another project I've known about for a while (although I was late...it's a few years old). It's essentially just a couple of motors and a string that moves the can of spray paint around. It makes the images from basic vector art and then figures out the path that it must go in to produce the art, similar to a CNC machine.
